the new language of thinkers

Mar 9th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

I don’t have the tools to talk about the large political, philosophical, sociological issues of our times. I don’t have the language, the exactness to express that need I have, that desire to explain my frustration with the system in which I live. The control it has over me, the all pervasiveness of it. I am frustrated in my attempts to try and articulate the situation I find myself in – like a baby who knows what they want but can’t say it, can’t be succinct, can only point in the general direction and grunt until someone eventually gets it. I am a babble machine vomiting goobledegook as I try to make my way beyond the shadow of control into the light of freedom.

the politics of an artistic process

Ideas aren’t born in the mainstream, they die there.
It is about time that we, as creative beings, say no. Say no to being part of the cultural machine, say no to artspeak, say no to vacuous commentary. Nail your flag, find out, seek out others for support, affirm yourselves because they will come after you, damn you, spit on you, condescend to you.

Do it, that’s right just fucking do it what are you waiting for, have an idea then make it happen now don’t wait, what are you waiting for, come on fuck it, fuck everyone, bang hard, be heard, stamp your feet, scream and shout fuck you fuck you fuck you begrudgers, the ones that say you can’t, that it’s impossible, that you need to be in the system, you need to apply for this grant and that fund you need special knowledge, arcane wisdom, a good signature and a natty suit to play the system, fuck the system you don’t need them

The quango tango

Feb 24th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

I was in Galway for a one night jaunt with my wife, without our daughter (first time in a year), last Friday. I Enjoy Galway. I used to live there and always had a good time. In the evening, on the way to the pub, I was busily scanning posters, as is my want; for […]

A year in the life

Feb 18th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

Today is my daughters birthday. She’s one year old. Been around a year – her entirety encompassed in 12 months. How much has changed. How relative everything is. But to see her awake and alive to the world you realise how much one can learn in a year.

Arts Council chops stick

Feb 12th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

With Irish Arts Council Revenue funding results out last week there was some blood spilt. Some companies and festivals did well (staying on the same funding level is good news in these times) others went to the wall. While I am totally disillusioned with the funding culture we have created in Ireland I was nevertheless upset to hear about those that didn’t make the cut. In real terms it means jobs gone and in these recessionary times having no job is a deep hole to dig out of. On the otherhand those companies that did get drastically cut - for the most part - deserved to be cut.

Sports daze

Before the rugby. The Six Nation Rugby Competition begins today and brings to mind the fact that we have no sports writers in this blog. A culture blog with no sports section is like a house with no roof. Nearly finished but missing a fundamental piece to make it complete.
We often think of sport as something outside our cultural framework – the topic of culture being primarily focussed on the arts; culture is art, theatre, dance…. Well. So it seems from where I sit. Sport seems to have its own individual place, its own context within our lives, separate from our daily cultural life when infact it is an inseparable part of our existence, even if we don’t follow any particular team.

Digging out of winter

Jan 30th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

Been a mixed week. A mixed month. Quick and gone. Already. So fast, into thin air, evaporated. Where does time go? The month has been mostly spent worrying about over - due tax returns, loss of earnings, future projects that are on hold, building traffic and page rank for mutant space and looking and searching for new technologies, free technologies that will help our resource on its way

In the Arena of radio

Jan 26th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

I was on National radio this week. Very exciting. Nerve wracking. I was petrified. This was it, my one moment, my pitch, my call to the nation to take action. I couldn’t afford to mess it up. Some people find radio easy; they’re relaxed, have an affable manner, are clear, concise, confident. Not me.  Thanks […]

SEO and me

Jan 26th, 2010 | By editor | Category: Mutant blog, Notes from Mutant Space arts resource

Been busying myself with SEO marketing…trying to optimize mutantspace.ie and its proving to be a long laborious process. What I have noticed is how many web marketing companies sell themselves as SEO experts and yet are not ranked highly on the very search engines they claim to be masters of. As someone recently said to […]
